About This Site

The Organic Gardening is written by a backyard gardener who has grown food without synthetic chemicals for about twenty years. We review the tools and supplies that make organic growing easier: compost tumblers, galvanized raised beds, hand tools like the hori hori, worm castings and other soil builders, and natural pest control such as neem oil. Every recommendation comes from use in a real garden, through real seasons, mistakes included.

Garden Safety

Gardening is gentle work, but the tools and supplies we review can still hurt you if you are careless with them. A hori hori knife has a sharp, partly serrated blade: keep it in its sheath when it is not in your hand, cut away from your body, and wear gloves when you dig blind into soil that may hide glass, wire or stones. Keep sharp tools out of reach of children.

Galvanized raised bed panels can have sharp edges and corners during assembly, so wear work gloves and eye protection while you put them together. A full compost tumbler and a bag of soil or castings are heavy. Lift with your legs, turn a loaded tumbler slowly, and keep fingers clear of the drum and frame where they can pinch.

Compost, soil and worm castings contain living microbes. Wear gloves, avoid touching your face while you work, and wash your hands well afterwards. Neem oil is a natural product but it is still a pest treatment: follow the label for dilution, test a spray on a few leaves first, avoid spraying in strong sun or heat, avoid open blooms while bees are working, and keep the concentrate away from eyes, children and pets. If you have a skin condition, allergy or health concern, talk to your doctor. Nothing on this site is medical or professional advice.
